Director of Learning Supports and Services
Posted on Sep 12, 2024Congratulations to Dr. Monica Braat on her appointment as Director of Learning Supports and Services with the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education, effective August 1, 2024.
Dr. Braat brings a wealth of expertise and experience to this role, with a Bachelor and Master of Education from the University of Lethbridge and a Doctorate of Education from Western University. In her 32-year career, including 26 years with the Medicine Hat Catholic system as a teacher and consultant where she has shown unwavering commitment to our students and community. Her work over the past 14 years has centered on inclusive education, working to ensure that all students have access to general education classrooms and curriculum through close collaboration with school staff, families, and service providers. Additionally, she now teaches graduate courses on literacy and numeracy for students with complex needs as a Term Lecturer for the University of Alberta.
In this role, Monica will collaborate with school support teams and service providers to enhance continuums of inclusive practices and supports that promote belonging, optimize learning, and support student well-being. She will collaborate with Learning Support Teachers to help educators implement effective classroom and instructional practices that meet the diverse academic and social needs of today's students. For students with complex support needs, Monica will continue to work with classroom teams, families, and community partners to develop personalized plans that support both school success and long-term life goals. Additionally, she will oversee the ongoing development of forms and workflows to ensure compliance with Alberta Education requirements while promoting proactive planning, team collaboration, and timely, constructive reporting.
