Esplanade Education Programs for Families Spring 2022
School Art 2022 – On Now through Aug 20
Full of colour, energy and talent, let this exhibition lift your spirits this Spring and Summer. Our display that showcases the creativity and skill of Medicine Hat and region’s students, from Kindergarten to Grade 12 has been a Medicine Hat tradition for the last 44 years. This annual exhibition has grown from 50 works in 1978 to over 800 from 41 different schools today.
Gallery Play! – Saturdays until June 11
This spring come play in the galleries on Saturday afternoons. This Pay What You Will experience is open for drop-in, no booking required. This gives you the flexibility you need to fit your busy schedule.
Guided activities start at 1 PM and repeat again at 2 PM so you can jump in and start at anytime!
Against The Grain – Starts May 5
Students aged 13-17 will enjoy 4 weeks of exploring still life drawing techniques in a variety of fine arts materials. They will have the opportunity to learn the basics of observation and composition using gestural sketching, and will develop their skills in value, depth, and dimension as the weeks progress.
Kid’s Celebrate! Passport to the World – May 14
On May 14th, travel with us around the world and celebrate! At this free family fun event take part in a selection of hands-on activity stations exploring cultures from around the world. Collect stamps in your Kids Celebrate! travel passport by visiting the tables of collaborating community organizations.
Art Box – May 19
This season let your creativity bloom with a selection of floral inspired projects.
Collage with pressed flowers to create your own unique composition. Then explore the print making process with silk foliage and our gelatin plates. Pick your favourite resulting artwork and matt it so that it is ready to pop into a frame and beautify your space with a touch of spring.
Sip & Create – June 9
Join Janelle Buye, owner/designer of Sweet Stems for a flower arranging experience. Sign-up for the family experience and create a flower crown. In honour of Sustainability Week this experience will incorporate sustainable materials and attendees will learn a little more about the importance of this practice.

In the morning, children will explore the exhibitions of the Esplanade and take part in play-based projects where they can exercise their imaginations, while developing their creative thinking and problem-solving skills. In the afternoon, we walk kids across a block away to the TREX Space where they have the opportunity to see the Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program in action!

Art couldn’t get any cooler with this latest Art Box experience! This winter get inspired with local chainsaw artist Marina Cole as she demonstrates ice carving! Following this demonstration Marina will give you some pointers on hand tool techniques before you try chipping and carving your own small block of ice.
Family Art Box is geared toward little ones and their adult companion, the winter project is recommended for ages 7+, under adult supervision.

Help Esplanade and Medalta staff fight against the “Agents of Deterioration”! You won’t need a cape, just maybe some white gloves and a little imagination, as you investigate these museum menaces through examples, hands on learning and demonstration experiments. Help us to defend against damaging physical forces, ultraviolet light and creepy crawlies! Recommended for ages 7+
