Posted on May 13, 2025
On Thursday, May 8, the Monsignor McCoy High School Track and Field team proudly hosted their second student-led track mini-meet for K-6 students! This year students from St. Louis, St. Francis Xavier, and St. Michael’s School were in attendance at the mini-meet.
This unique event is entirely planned and led by Monsignor McCoy students under the guidance of Track and Field Coach Ms. Amber Hamilton. From organizing event logistics and stuffing candy bags to running stations and supporting athletes on the day of, Monsignor McCoy students are taking the lead in delivering a fun and inspiring day for their younger peers.
Laine Gauthier, Grade 12 student and event organize says “I think this meet provides a great opportunity for students within the division to experience a sport alongside individuals who live and breathe it every day. This sport is often overlooked early in someone’s sport journey and tends to sneak up on them in middle school. The goal of this meet is to introduce students to the sport and encourage them to feel comfortable enough to join a team when the opportunity arises, rather than be scared by it. This event also creates a sense of community within the division, hopefully sparking connections and inspiring students to look forward to what comes ahead.”
Teacher and Coach Amber Hamilton shares her thoughts on the event, “This meet is such a combination of teamwork, sportsmanship, camaraderie, and community. My high school athletes are great role models for the elementary kids during this event and truly are heroes in the eyes of the littles. To be able to hold an event that is completely organized by my track athletes and watch the little kids become so energized about getting to be in the same space as my big kids is such a fun experience. This isn’t about a program, or numbers, or points. This is all about community and connection. It’s about bringing our schools together to bring compassion, teamwork, and confidence to the forefront.”
“We love seeing these meaningful connections between our high school and elementary schools. This event not only builds community—it also gives our student-athletes the chance to share their passion, collaborate, and participate in real-life experiences that prepare them for life outside of high school.” Said Dr. Dwayne Zaricnhy, Superintendent of Schools
The mini-meet will feature a variety of classic track and field events and aims to foster teamwork, school spirit, and mentorship among students across Medicine Hat Catholic schools.
