McCoy athletes rank high in free throw event
Posted on Apr 29, 2021A pair of Monsignor McCoy High School athletes were among the best in the province in a free throw competition held last month.
Colts Sloan Akins and Claire Holt got shout-outs from the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association for their performances in the virtual free throw contest held in March. Akins sank 19 of 20 while Holt made 18 of her 20 on March 25.
While those totals weren't enough to garner first place — two boys and two girls each managed a perfect score — Akins shared third spot among boys and Holt was fourth out of all the girls.
Holt is graduating this year while Akins is wrapping up his Grade 10 season at McCoy, where basketball teams haven't played a game since last March due to the pandemic. They both welcomed the chance to have something to compete in.
"This is probably the most competition I'm going to get all year," Holt told the Medicine Hat News.
“It’s nice because it’s been a bit of a disappointing season and we haven’t really had any form of competition. So, it’s good to have some form of competition against schools across the province,” said Akins.
