Holy Week

Posted on Mar 26, 2021

We now enter into one of the most significant times in our liturgical year - Holy Week.

We begin the week with Palm Sunday commemorating the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem riding on the back of a donkey and being greeted with waving palm fronds. At church we hear of the Passion of Christ and are given blessed palms.

Holy Thursday or Maundy Thursday is when we remember Jesus washing the feet of his disciples showing that we are all meant to serve one another. It is also the day that we acknowledge the institution of the Eucharist during the Last Supper. Jesus then goes into the Garden of Gethsemane to pray and where he is arrested.

Good Friday is the most somber of the days with the flogging, crucifixion and death of Jesus on the cross. When we look upon the cross we are reminded of the suffering he endured for us and allows us to gain strength as we carry our own crosses in life. He is taken down from the cross and laid in the tomb.

Holy Saturday is a time of vigil and indeed at the Easter Vigil we welcome those into our parishes that have been journeying to join the family of Christ. And then we have the joy of Jesus’ resurrection and of Easter! God so loved us that he sent his only Son to save us and we rejoice and are glad!
