Have your say on the draft K-6 curriculum

Take part in a virtual engagement session until February 28 to share specific, constructive feedback that will help  Alberta’s government strengthen the draft kindergarten to Grade 6 (K-6) curriculum. There will be regional  sessions on each subject and the draft K-6 Social Studies design blueprint to hear diverse viewpoints from  Albertans across the province.

During each session, you will:

  • receive an overview presentation on the draft K-6 curriculum
  • break into focused, small group sessions about one subject or the blueprint, facilitated by an independent engagement specialist
  • share your feedback and hear the perspectives of other Albertans.

All sessions will be in English, except for French First Language and Literature, which will be facilitated in French.  Live closed captioning and French facilitation will be provided for English sessions if needed.

New public engagement to strengthen draft K-6 curriculum

Albertans will now have more opportunities to give feedback on the draft K-6 curriculum through regional online engagement sessions.

Alberta’s government is committed to engaging with Albertans and listening to all feedback on the draft K-6 curriculum and draft social studies design blueprint. Last fall, in-person engagement sessions were postponed due to the pandemic. Considering current public health measures, the government is providing new virtual engagement sessions to hear diverse viewpoints from Albertans.

The virtual sessions will be held from Jan. 31 to Feb. 28 across all five regions: north, Edmonton and surrounding area, central, Calgary and surrounding area, and south. Regional sessions will enable communities to share local insights and unique perspectives on the draft K-6 curriculum. Sessions will include focused, small group conversations facilitated by independent engagement specialists. During each session, the draft K-6 social studies design blueprint or one draft K-6 subject will be considered and discussed so Albertans can provide insightful feedback.

Albertans can sign up for notifications about upcoming engagements and register for sessions at alberta.ca/curriculum-have-your-say.aspx.

This spring, Alberta’s government will carefully consider the feedback from all engagement opportunities and classroom piloting. This input will be used to finalize the social studies design blueprint, develop the corresponding draft social studies curriculum and further revise all subjects in the draft K-6 curriculum.

Next steps for K-6 curriculum implementation

Alberta’s government is establishing a Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group to provide advice and recommendations on the implementation strategy and timelines for a new kindergarten to Grade 6 (K-6) curriculum. The group will help determine how new curriculums for English Language Arts and Literature, Mathematics, and Physical Education and Wellness will be successfully implemented in September 2022. This includes identifying potential supports that may be needed and options for providing these supports to school authorities. They will also provide advice and recommendations on the continuation of piloting the remaining K-6 subjects beginning in September 2022 and provide strategies for implementing these subjects beginning in September 2023.

Key facts

  • The Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group is expected to be in place until June 2022.
  • Alberta Education will develop a provincial implementation plan for a new K-6 curriculum by considering the strategic advice and recommendations the group provides.
  • The Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group began meeting in January and is expected to meet at least monthly for the duration of the term.
  • Meetings will be held virtually. Should any travel be required, Alberta Education will reimburse members for any travel expenses that are not covered by their organizations.
  • The majority of members of the Curriculum Implementation Advisory Group hold positions where their names are already publicly available. To ensure the personal information of the individuals working in non-public roles, such as teachers, remains private and to help ensure they do not become targets of online harassment, Alberta Education will not be releasing the names of these members.
