The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education is thrilled to share that we have received collegiate funding to support the new First Responder Academy at Monsignor McCoy High School. This bold and innovative program was developed in partnership with the Medicine Hat Police Service, Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services, and Medicine Hat College.
Thanks to a significant grant of nearly $700,000 from the government of Alberta, MHCBE will launch the First Responders Academy at Monsignor McCoy High School, with a satellite lab located directly at the Medicine Hat Police Station.
The funding will support staffing, curriculum development, and the purchase of specialized training equipment, ensuring students receive the most realistic and relevant preparation possible for future careers in policing and emergency response.
"This partnership marks a new chapter in career education,” said Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Dwayne Zarichny “This program is unlike any program in Alberta. We are deeply grateful for the grant and excited to collaborate with the Medicine Hat Police Service and Medicine Hat College to inspire and prepare the next generation of first responders.”
The program will feature cutting edge technology to simulate real life scenarios and enhance hands-on learning. Equipment will include:
- A tactical training area
- A 360-degree simulator
- Drones and drone operation technology
- Tactical gear
- And more
In addition to in-school learning at Monsignor McCoy, students will benefit from direct access to a training lab located in the Police Services building.
“We are proud to partner in shaping the future of public safety through the First Responder Academy,” said Chief of Police Alan Murphy. “This investment reflects a shared commitment to innovation, education, and community resilience. By opening our doors and sharing our experience, we’re helping prepare the next generation with the real-world skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to serve with integrity and purpose.”
The First Responders Academy will launch at Monsignor McCoy High School in Fall 2025, offering grade 10, 11 and 12 students a unique opportunity to explore careers in policing, right here in Medicine Hat.
