Monsignor McCoy Honours Indigenous Graduates

Posted on May 16, 2025

On Tuesday, May 13th, students and their families attended Monsignor McCoy High School’s second Indigenous Graduation Ceremony.

The intimate ceremony was held to recognize First Nations, Métis and Inuit graduates in a meaningful way, surrounded by culture and community.

“…Divided we fall, united we stand. You, the class of 2025, are the overcomer’s, you have overcome stereotypes, barriers, trauma, and negative statistics; so stand tall and do not let anyone put you down or tell you differently.” Said Mr. Josh Cross, Division Indigenous Wellness Facilitator, during his address to graduating students.

We acknowledge the unique barriers that Indigenous students may face on their path to graduation and recognize the strength, resilience, and determination it takes to reach this milestone.

During the ceremony, each graduate was gifted a blanket and a hand-beaded lanyard, which they will proudly wear during next week’s Cap and Gown Ceremony. The celebration concluded with a powerful honour song by Elder Charlie Fox.

This event was made possible through the support of our division Indigenous Wellness Facilitator, Mr. Josh Cross, the dedicated staff of Monsignor McCoy High School, the Miywasin Friendship Centre and the Medicine Hat Public Library who graciously allowed ceremonial smudging to take place.

Mrs. Heather Irvine, Religious Education Coordinator was one of several senior administrators  and board members in attendance. “I am very grateful to be able to gather in solidarity with school division and community members to celebrate the students recognized at the Monsignor McCoy High School's Indigenous Graduation Ceremony.” Said Irvine. “This celebration has become a meaningful tradition for the Medicine Hat Catholic School Division.”

May we continue to honour the past while embracing a future rooted in compassion, awareness, and healing.
